rim fire/center fire

Post by No toes »

Just purchased an 1892 mod. 32 Marlin designated "rim/ctr" and informed it is a convertible firing pin, rim fire or centerfire. What kind of smithing is required and are parts for this available?

No toes;

The 2nd variation of the Model 1891 and the Model 1892/'92 were both made in the .32 Colt caliber. This caliber was available in either rim or center fire cartridges in short, long and long rifle sizes.
The 1891 and 1892 could adapt to either the rim or center fire cartridges by changing the firing pin. Both styles of firing pin came with the rifle when new. The only thing necessary to change the firing pin was to remove the side plate and take the breech bolt out and then exchange the firing pin to whatever type of cartridge the individual wanted to shoot.
The center fire firing pin has the "pin" part at the bottom of the front edge and the rim fire has the "pin" part at the top edge of the firing pin.
Wisner's has sold firing pins of both styles. No gun-smithing is really necessary.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

The only thing that I had to do, was file the top edge of the new centerfire pin, so it wouldn't rub against the frame when cycled.
Those rimfire rounds are pricey. If you reload, centerfire is the way to go.
Old West Bullet Moulds makes an adjustable case holder, so that the 32 short or trimmed Long Colt cases heel based bullet can be nicely crimped using the standard dies. Have fun plinking.
