Model 1889 from 1896-1903 ?
Brophy lists 183 Model 1889s shipped from 1896 to 1903 as "assembled from parts on hand". Is that info in the records or did Brophy get that from another source. Would a "factory letter" include that information?

Bbsoda;
The factory records would show the ship date for those particular guns only. Those guns may or may not have been "assembled from parts on hand" as Brophy states. They may have been complete guns simply laying around in the warehouse and never sold until the later dates. We see instances of guns with serial numbers in the same sequence with ship dates as much as 2 or 3 years apart. This seems more prevalent with the Model 1895, indicating the big bore guns were not as popular and did not sell as well as expected.

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Thanks for the information. I bet that we find that many of those 183 Model 1889s will prove to be "special order" guns. Just saw the records for # 88940 as carbine, .44 caliber, 20" barrel, shipped August 2, 1899. This gun was "made", or numbered, in 1892. It has a half nickel finish and very fancy wood. Half nickel meaning the barrel and magazine are blued and all other metal is nickel plated. It also has a model 1894 barrel which probably means it was "final" assembled in 1899. The "parts on hand" were there because they were supposed to be used for special order guns, but got used to fill other orders later. I note that Marlin still had a deluxe rifle in stock as late as 1907!!

What barrel marking is on this carbine? Does it say Marlin Fire-Arms Company or Marlin Firearms Company?

I'm working from a lousy picture but I'm pretty sure it is the hyphenated version. MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. Again, only working from lousy pics I'm reasonably certain the gun is original, though I'll see it next week and can better assess that. Bill
