Orphington;
No. The Marlin Model 1897 is a black powder gun, and shooting modern, high speed ammunition in it can crack the breech bolt if it is the original breech bolt.
You can shoot modern, standard velocity or target ammunition that is lower in velocity and pressures.

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Any ideas where I can get .22 LR ammunition loaded with black powder?

So, standard velocity is ALWAYS safe, or marginally safe?

Orpington;
Standard velocity is considered safe in the older Marlins. The good thing about standard velocity ammunition is that is readily available. I have seen several dealers selling bricks of standard velocity at the Tulsa show. You may have to get a local dealer to order some in for you or go to the Tulsa show.
