I am in the process of buying a Marlin 39 D (1971) with some mild exterior rust and because this is my most beloved gun ever (I lost mine bought new in a burglary.) I want to have it refinished to new.
Normally my first thought was a factory refinish, but with Marlin having been sold and the horror stories heard, I am looking for alternatives. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Refinishing a Marlin
With regards to bluing, doing your own rust bluing is pretty reasonable. I have done it quite a bit, and if I can, anyone can. But you have to learn to polish well, and then the rust bluing is easy. It will give you a fair bit of sweat equity in that rifle too.
The equipment needed is not too complicated, but you must be able to remove the barrel and completely disassemble the rifle (and then reassemble it.
