Marlin 36 - Should it have a 20" barrel

Post by Theduke »

First post Newbie,
I have a Marlin 36 D model 1947 that has a 20" barrel. I am trying to find out if this originally had a 24" barrel and some time has been shortened. The barrel is marked "MODEL 36 -A". Should it be SC for short carbine?

Thanks in advance

Theduke;

The 36-A version should have a 24 inch barrel. The 36 SC (Sporting Carbine) and 36 C (regular carbine) will have 20 inch barrels.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Not necessarily. I've seen all sorts of different markings on old Model 36 Marlins. I'm pretty sure Marlin wasn't that careful with what rollstamp they used on a particular model back then. Yours could very well be original, and not have the correct rollstamp. I had a 36 carbine with a barrel marked "Model 36 A-DL" Always thought it was cut down until Don Anderson set me straight on it.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!

Thank you for sharing your expertise. I am having a hard time finding specific details on 36 and 336. Any books that you would recommend?
Thanks again

TheDuke;

The best book on Marlins is by William S. Brophy titled "Marlin Firearms , A History of the Guns and the Company that made them." A few years back, there was a book by Doug Murray (sp?) on the Model 336. You might be able to find one on eBay or ABE Books.
Brophy covers the entire Marlin line from 1863 to 1989 when the book was published.
