I recently picked up an excellent condition 1894 44 Magnum. It has a Lyman rear and a filler in place of the std barrel mounted buckhorn base. The entire gun looks in such great condition that I suspect it's not been altered since new, including NO sling hardware added. But I have not yet found any reference stating Marlin ever made them at the factory like this.
Thoughts anyone?

Del1216;
Marlin would not have installed the sights you mention. They had their "standard" set of sights, and that is what would have been installed when it left the factory.
Your sights were probably installed by someone that wanted a longer sight radius, or simply likes and shoots better with the tang mounted sight. At least one, old time exhibition shooter by the name of Captain Albert Hardy used tang mounted sights on his rifles as that is what he preferred. His rifles had a blank in the standard rear sight slot, too.

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!
