Marlin "94" lever 25-20?
I have an old Marlin 94 in 25-20. The serial number is D44##. I would like to know about when it was made. It has an octagon barrel. Thanks for the help.

marlinman93, the barrel is marked MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. NEW-HAVEN. CT,U.S.A. (top) , PATENTED, OCT. 11, 1887. APRIL 2, 1889, AUG. 1893 (BOTTOM). 25-20 M. It has a 24 inch octagon barrel, full length magazine, concave butt plate, and Marlin MODEL'94 on the tang. The front sight is silver. The back sight is what I call the buckhorn type. I figure it was made after 1906 but that is all I know. I'm just learning about Marlins. I have an old Marlin 36 that I traded for in college and always liked them. I'm 60 and wanting to learn more. Thanks for your time. P.S. I forgot, no bullseye that I can see.

Just where is that serial number located? Is it up near the forearm, or is it located under the lever? I believe guns that have the number up near the forearm were assembled from parts on hand by either Marlin Arms Corporation during 1916 or by Marlin-Rockwell between 1917 - 1921. Guns with the serial number located under the lever were made by the Marlin Firearms Corporation between 1921 and 1924 and by the Marlin Firearms Company after 1924. This is just a theory of mine, but a number of other knowledgeable collectors tend to agree with it.

I also have a '94 that totally matches the description of your rifle. S# D44XX.
Haven't been able to to date it. I'm certain that my Uncle purchased it post WW1 in St. Jo, MO.
Thanks for the great forum.

What is the letter prefix of your Marlin Model '94? Where is the serial number located? Up near the forearm or under the lever?

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!
