Post by Helnz »

We have a Marlin rifle that was dated Oct.1887. April 1889. In New Haven Ct.
Serial number 231774. It's a lever action rifle. Any information would help.

The model should be on the top tang behind the hammer. You may have a tang mounted sight covering it up. Your gun should be a model 1894 Marlin. These were made from 1894 until the 1930's, although the catalog designation was changed from 1894 to "Model '94" in around 1906.
The 1894 qwas chambered in pistol cartridges, and the earlier ones like your's were in .25-20, .32-20, .38-40, and .44-40 calibers. The 1894 was reintroduced in 1969, and is still being made. It has a few changes from your early gun, but pretty much looks the same.
Your gun was probably made around 1901 or 1902 era.
Hope this helps.
