1897 texan trouble

I just puchased a 1897 texan for my grand son and it was as if new . After trying to break the gun down I can't make it work with the safty on or off the scew that hods it together is loos and the two sections move but won'''t seperate . I also don't feel the hammer hits the firing pin Im have no instruction book so I am lost. any help or suggestions ...PLEASE...Pat
