Year of manufacture

Post by George »

I picked up a lever action rifle at a tag sale. I was wondering when it was made. Stamped on the barrel is Glenfield Mod 30, The Marlin Firearms Co.
New Haven Conn U.S.A. Cal 30-30. It has a 20 in. round barrel. The serial number is AB126xx. Thanks.

MARLIN FIREARMS by William Brophy has some information on serial number vs. year of manufacture. THE 336 by Doug Murray has a little more, and various issues of the Marlin Firearms Collector's Association newsletter have small additions occasionally.

Since all the information has not been recorded, there is also a process of deductive reasoning that can be applied to certain serial numbers. By comparing the known years for certain features such as the bullseye trademark and barrel roll stamp, a firearm's age can be deduced fairly accurately. Some of the more knowledgeable collectors here are quite good at this. SW
