marlin lever action

I'm totally new to this forum and want to ask a question that probably has already been asked. But here goes: I inherited a Marlin Model -36-A-Dl-30-30 CAL-----------A with a Serial number under the lever of : C 7478. I have used it as my saddle gun on the ranch and it has bounced around in my pickup a bit. I know that the stock was replaced with a Marlin stock. It is tapped on top for a scope and on the side for what I believe would be a Lyman type sight. The rifling is in excellent condition and there is no bluing left on receiver and barrel. I would like to know any details as to mfg date and anything that someone may know about this model. The darn thing is very inaccurate and I have had trouble adjusting the rear sight which appears to be what is locally called a buckhorn sight.Thanks..

I would say it was made in 1946 because of the C prefix to the serial number.

I have a 1945 model 36RC and it is also factory tapped for a scope. I have not yet found a single piece mount that is currently made that fits the rifle and tapped holes correctly - the holes appear smaller than modern day screw sizes.

I am new to this forum as well and I too inherited a 36-A-DL from my father who never shot it as far as I know (it was originally my great grandfather's gun and looks like he did use it!) I actually took my first two deer with this gun in the early 90's and it's been stored ever since. I recently got interested in it again and am wanting to know more about it. Below are the markings:

1) Top of barrel: The Marlin Firearms Co. New Haven, Conn. U.S.A. Est. 1870
Model 36-A-DL-30-30 CAL. ---------------o-------------- A
2) Serial number under lever: D18404 (it looks like the "D" didn't stamp all the way on the bottom so it comes out looking like an odd lower case "n".
3) Square bolt
4) Non-checkered stock and fore end. The bottom of the stock has a around a 5/16" white plastic insert with a black center
5) Plastic butt plate
5) Iron sights
6) No mounting holes in barrel

The whole gun looks like it came from the factory like this. I guess I would like to know when it was manufactured and what it may be worth? It is solid with some minor dings to the wood from normal use. The bluing I'd say is about 50%. Overall it's still a nice looking gun. As far as I know it still functions normally...at least it did when I used it last some 30 years ago!

Since many Model 36 Marlins used the ADL marked barrel, even some that weren't ADL's! Need to see images of your gun to determine if it is indeed a true ADL, or one of those Marlin fitted leftover barrels to. It makes a big difference in value.
The D prefix would indicate a 1947 date.

Thanks for the pictures! That is exactly what I was referring to by Marlin using ADL barrels on regular 36A rifles. Yours is indeed such a specimen and a 36A, not 36A-DL. Still a very nice rifle, and one most would love to own.
