My fathers (age 90) has a Model 1893 that has been in our family since his grandfather purchased it in we believe the early 1900's or late 1890's. We are trying to determine when it was manufactured. I couldn't figure out how to post pictures but the markings on the gun are:
It says Model 1893
Serial number is A7660
It says "Marlin Safety" on the top of the receiver
on the barrel it says Marlin Firearms Co., New-Haven, CT. U.S.A
Pat'd Oct. 11.1887. April 2. 1889. Aug. 1.1893
Special Smokeless Steel
It has the older style flip up rear site. It has a saddle ring.
Any accurate information we could get would be greatly appreciated. Please know the gun is NOT for sale.

Crofut;
Since your rifle (carbine with sling ring) is marked Model 1893, and has an "A" prefix serial number, the date of manufacture will be in the 1916 time frame.

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Re: Model 1893 30-30
Thank you for the response. Do you know of any published accurate literature on the history of these rifles?
Re: Model 1893 30-30
Currently the best book available is
Marlin Firearms: A History of the Guns and the Company That Made Them
by William S. Brophy USAR
I should mention however there are not factory records for the rifles produced during that time period.
Your serial number is interesting...as it may be the highest A prefix s/n that I have seen to date.
