Marlin Model 39 M Original Golden ( Mountie)

Perusing the website recently to determine info on my Model 39 M, it was interesting to note that only 6 were made in 1980 of which only 5 were seemingly accounted for. It just so happens that mine may be # 6. It is a Marlin Model 39M Original Golden with JM stamp on the barrel with
SN: 20300003, gold trigger, 20" barrel. This unit is also known as a 39M Mountie or 1897 Mountie according to other posts on the 39 M; rifle is in excellent condition.
Please advise if mine might be the #6 unit made in 1980 as the definition of the serial number (100-20 = 80) would indicate that is the case.
Would appreciate input on this item. Thanks.

Also? It appears your serial number is different than the OP's above? So what is "also"?

Yes, yours should be 1980.

New here, excuse my ignorance please. Thought that the 20 at the beginning of the ser# identified the rifle as having been made in 1980…??

Your 39 M does have a 1980 receiver. One thing about Marlin, is that at times, left over parts were used in following years of dated items.
There may have been only 6 39 M's released by Marlin in 1980, but some left over receivers dated for 1980 could have been used later. The Marlin Factory records would reflect only the 6 guns for 1980 as that was all that was released that year. There may well be more than the 6 guns with the 1980 dated receivers out there. Most likely, these other guns with 1980 receivers were released early in 1981 to use up the 1980 dated receivers.

Since the first numbers of a Marlin serial number determine the year of manufacture, it's possible to find thousands of guns with the same first two numbers. That doesn't mean the serial numbers are the same; it just means they start with the same number and were likely built the same year.
