M39 Article 2 stock finish
What was the original factory finish on the stock/forearm of the Marlin Model 39 Article 2? Was it like most other Marlins? Was it a hand rubbed rather glossy oil finish? Was it a real glossy thick finish, sort of like epoxy, like used on many Remingtons of the era? If other, please describe. Were any of them checkered? If so, what pattern? Picture please?

Leon;
At the time the Article II was made, Marlin used a process called "Mar-Shield" to finish the stocks. This was an electrostatic process where the wood was negatively charged on a rack that traveled around a spray booth. The wood was dipped in a salt water solution then given an electrical charge so when the positively charged finish was introduced into the spray booth, the wood would attract the charged finish. The finish was so evenly applied this way, there were no runs and the finish was in every nook and cranny. That finish was then hand scuffed and a second, gloss coat of varnish sprayed onto the wood.
None of the Article II's were checked.

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Re: M39 Article 2 stock finish
So, did all the Marlin at that time get that Mar-Shield finish or just the Article 2?

All Marlins received the Mar-Shield finish. It was an improvement and quicker method to apply finish and very durable.
