Marlin model 80

Post by mvoshell »

Hello all,
I recently received a model 80 from my wife's family after my mother in law passed. My father in law thought it had been stolen along with other things when his garage was broken into. Anyway, the weapon was left unattended in a garage for many years, and just reciently found. It is in bad shape now, with rust overlaying parts of the action and barrel. I have been doing some research on removing the rust and refinishing the entire weapon. First off, I know next to nothing about this rifle. I need a manual with schematics, and any suggestions on the best way to remove the rust without further damaging the rifle would be greatly appreciated.
I also would like you opinions on the value of the rifle. As a family heirloom, it is valuable to us, thus why we want to stop the rust and put some TLC into it. But a buddy of mine suggested I check its value with someone who knows these rifles, because according to him, refinishing it could damage its value to a collector.
Thanks
Michael V
