Marlin 39 ques. with pics

Post by redoftx »

Hello. Can the experts please tell me the good(if any) the bad, and the ugly?
Is the buttplate correct? I know the screws should probably be slotted. The rear sight isn’t right either.
Is the front sight correct? The serial number is 64XX. 4 digits only. No ‘S’ prefix. Can anyone tell what year it was made?
It’s not a rifle made of 2 different rifles is it? Has anyone seen an attachment like the in the picture for the sling attachment?
Just looking to learn. Thank you, redoftx.

Redoftx;

The front sight is the correct sight for a Model 39. The butt plate appears to be the correct butt plate, but should have slotted screws as you mentioned. It may be a reproduction butt plate as the company that sells reproduction plated sells the Phillips screws with their plates, so if it fits, it may be correct and original, but then again, it may not be the original but a reproduction. Hard to say without seeing it in person.
The rear sight is a Redfield, and Marlin never installed Redfield sights, so it is a replacement. It appears that the barrel has been drilled and tapped for a scope mount.
Your gun appears to be original, but with the mis-matching numbers, it is hard to say. It all fits together properly, so it may be a factory mis-match. Look for other numbers under the wood. There are instances in the old Marlin factory records that mention mis-matched halves of guns in the Model 1897, so it may be possible with the Model 39 when the company was using every part available to sell complete guns. Since your Model 39 does not have a letter or letters prefix, then it was made between 1921 and 1926. Probably in the middle of those dates would be about right for your gun.
Interesting sling attachment, but not original nor have I ever seen anything like it.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

The growing federal deficit = generational slavery to the national debt.

If the world was perfect.......it wouldn't be.
