Three Model 25 Pumps

Post by Dave Woods »

I think Marlin made the Model 25 pump for more than one year.
Brophy says 1910 only. I have evidence that this is not the case.

My earliest 25 has the long "L" shaped locking lever like the early
Model 20. When the carrier is raised, there is a gap between the
end of the carrier and the chamber. A CB Cap has to make a leap
of faith over the gap to get into it. The coil retracting spring for
the firing pin is at the front of the bolt. This Model 25 is
definitely patterned after the early Model 20.

My next Model 25 has the short "L" shaped locking lever
like the Model 20-S. The retracting spring is still a coil
spring at the front of the bolt, However, the Tang still
reads just Model 25.

My last Model 25 is marked Model 25-S on the Tang. It has
the same bolt and firing pin as the Model 20-A with the
retracting plunger at the rear of the bolt. It also has a
little tray that fills in the gap between the end of the raised
carrier and the chamber.

To me, the Model 25 was made in limited quantities from
1910 to perhaps 1913 or longer. These were obviously
designed for the gallery trade. On demand, Marlin made
some up, using what ever Bolt / Locking Lever system
was in production at the time. I have the concrete evidence
to support this.
