Old 39 serial # help
Friend just bought an old Marlin 39 (possibly pre-dates 39?) .22, octagon bbl, looks like case hardened receiver, ser# is 72** (4 digit) on grip under the lever, marked for S, L, or LR. Any idea on date of mfg?

I would guess that it was made around 1923. Shoot only standard velocity ammo in it.
It's a chancey job and it makes a man watchfull....and a little lonely.
