Marlin model 39
I purchased a marlin model 39 several years ago from the grandson of the original owner. This rifle has a serial number of HS1705 under the lever. Does anyone know the approximate year of manufacture? Thanks

The "HS" serial number prefix was used from 1932 to 1939. With a low serial number like the one on your Model 39 will most likely be a first year production gun, 1932.
The "HS" prefix stands for High Speed. Up until this time, it was not advised to use the new, modern high speed ammunition in any .22 caliber Marlin rifles as damage to the rifle could be the result.

Thank you sir. The rifle is in excellent condition, most likely kept in a safe for years. Even has a Redfield peep sight that apears to have been installed when the gun was new.
