Marlin 1889 Rifle

Post by Crupert »

I received a Marlin Rifle patented October 11, 1887-April 2,1889 with a 28 in barrel, serial # 93953 and .38-W on top of barrel and is lever action .
I'd like to know the caliber and type of ammo used?

.38-40 WCF ammo. A bit tough to find factory ammo for, and most who shoot it much reload with cast lead bullet loads. It will shoot BP, or mild smokeless loads equally well. Here's a couple examples:

Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
