Marlin 1884 made in 1885

Post by Schornstinefager »

I recently purchased a collection of guns an amongst them was a marlin lever action marked 38wcf serial 1212xx dates it to 1885
Typical cowboy gun obviously carried By the finish but great shape Otherwise Everything locked up tight chamber good rifle boar ect im a gun scratcher and was wanting a lever action to do a Nimski style engraving on . A friend is a fan of old winchester marlin types and screamed when I suggested it. Hey the gun needed refinishing anyway ....he wasn’t amused . That said before I do something horrible what is the actual value of this particular weapon I tried to get pictures posted the photo bucket will not let me upload anything at the moment site must be down for maintenance.

You're off by a decade on both date and model. Should date to 1895, and likely a Model 1894. And it's Nimschke the engraver.
Can't tell you the value, as I can't see it.

K got some pics this is the older of the 2 marlin carbines like this in the collection. Looks like the other 15 were a Winchester Carbine and 7 gallery guns
A few marlin 22 auto feeders, and a marlin 922m. Heres a example of the Nimschke scroll i did on a old wooped revolver a couple years ago .
Image. My question is would you if you could ? or should I trade it for a new one and cut on that

Not a good enough picture for me to hazard a guesstimate of value. I'd need closer images of the individual gun, and accurate bore description, before I'd attempt a value.

The caliber is .38-40 Winchester. I would agree with your friend that this gun is too good and too original to do any alterations to it. The round barrel is fairly unusual, but not something that adds value, as most people prefer the more common octagon barrel. But the gun appears unmolested, and still has all the original age from over 100 years of existence. And the bore looks very shootable, and a little elbow grease might bring it up even further.
I'd expect to see it for sale at one of the big gun shows at around $750-$850.
