What models were chambered for .219 Zipper?

Post by johnnyboyday »

I found an old list of the guns my grandfather once owned, and all but one of them he left to members of the family.
The one on the list that we don't have says: "Marlin 219 Zipper Rifle W843"
The W would suggest 1963, correct?
So far the only Marlin rifle I've seen listed in 219 zipper is the lever action 336, are there any other Marlin rifles chambered in 219 zipper?
My understanding is the 336 in 219 zipper was not made in 1963.

What I'd like to do is find out what Marlin rifle he had and try to buy one to complete the list.
Any help would be appreciated.

Johnnyboyday;

You are correct in the "W" serial number prefix was for 1963. The Marlin Model 336 in .219 Zipper was made from 1955 to 1959. Only 3,230 were made in the .219 Zipper caliber during the production run.
The .219 Zipper was not a good cartridge for the Micro-Groove rifling, and the barrels did not stand up well and Marlin ended up discontinuing the caliber.
For a while, leftover .219 Zipper barrels were sold to Numrich Parts Corporation and a number of them found their way into receivers which may be how your Grandfather's rifle came about. And, since most of these rifles did not shoot well after a while, many owners sold them.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!
