What Does "D" in Serial Number Mean?

Post by WarGamer »

What does the "D" in the serial number mean?
My Model 1893 serial number is D6xxx. Just entering the numbers gives a manufacture date of 1883 which does not seem possible.
It has MODEL 1893 stamped on the rifle tang.

WarGamer;

Since your Marlin is stamped Model 1893, I am going to guess that the serial number is up by the forearm. If it is, then this will make your gun one of the sporting arms assembled towards the end of WW I by Marlin-Rockwell Corporation. With the "D" prefix serial number, it will be later, around 1919/1920.
Is this a round barrel, .30-30 caliber rifle? That seems to be the majority of what was being produced at that time.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

The growing federal deficit = generational slavery to the national debt.

If the world was perfect.......it wouldn't be.
