Old Marlin .22, tube mag in stock

Post by Oscarbob »

Greetings,

New on this forum but it appears I am becoming a collector of old Marlin .22s. I recently saw a bolt-action Marlin .22 that had a tubular magazine in the stock. The magazine on this rifle inserts through the rear of the stock, there was also a loading port in the side of the stock. The individual who had this rifle told me that it was only manufactured for a couple of years in the 1950's. I got the model number but failed to write it down and of course forgot it. Subsequently, I can find nothing about a Marlin rifle with the above characteristics. Any help would be appreciated.

Oscarbob;

Do not know of a bolt action rifle that loaded through a port in the side of the butt stock, but Marlin did make a semi-automatic, .22 caliber rifle that did. It was the Model 98, and was made from 1957 to 1959. There were a total of 9,061 of these rifles made.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Thanks for the reply. Hope I'm not tossed off the site for making such a stupid mistake, but you are absolutely right, the rifle is a model 98. I was looking at old bolt .22's when I was shown this and just had it in my head that it too was a bolt gun. I do own a "Ranger" model 36 made for Sears by Marlin in the 30's and a pristine Camp 45, as well as an 1894C. The 98 struck me as a unique item possibly worth adding to my growing Marlin collection.

I have a model 98 and am looking for the front sight assembly and the breach bolt handle and hopefully a manual with parts list
I just acquired this and I want to try and restore it

Check Numrich. They might have what you need.

Thank you for the quick reply.
They seem to have the parts I need but I really want a manual or user guide.
They had a PDF with the parts but no manual

The parts diagram should be fairly helpful in figuring out disassembly. I guess it depends on your skill level, and if you feel comfortable trying it.
