Marlin 94 build date and value
I have a Marlin 94 38-40 that was given to me in 1975 or so from a family friend. Its serial number is 1125 and it has a star on the top tang. Unfortunately is was drilled and tapped on the top of the receiver and appears to have been re-blued and the stock refinished. Any thoughts on value on this rifle? based on the serial number I would guess this is an early 1900's rifle.

Peaceman;
Your Marlin Model '94 would most likely have been made sometime in the 1920's. The star is one indication of that.
What is the barrel marking on your rifle? Is it Marlin Firearms Company or Marlin Firearms Corporation? Is there a "bullseye" in the toe of the stock?
The holes in the top of the receiver may be factory holes for the Marlin-Hepburn receiver sight. Would need to see pictures to know for sure. If these are factory holes, then this is one of those left over receivers used to assemble guns after the start-up of the new company after WW I. They were using everything on hand to cut costs and get the product out.
As to value, not a lot. It is now a shooter as the collector value is gone with the re-blue and stock refinish.

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Re: Marlin 94 build date and value
Thanks for the reply. From what I read about the Marlin-Hepburn sight, the holes in my rifle are farther apart than what would have been factory holes. A shooter it will remain but I may consider replacing the stock with something a little fancier. Any thoughts on where one can find replacement stocks for the 94?

Precision Gun Stocks of Kerrville, Texas makes stocks. They have a website with photos you can see what they do.
