Marlin 1881 ejector

Post by hcvrr »

I am putting together an 1881 large frame rifle. I can't find a bolt so I am milling out a new one. I have it almost done but need to put in the ejector slot. Brophy's book shows an early bolt face (probably less than 65 made) that has a straight ejector just under the firing pin hole. All later bolts used the horse shoe design ejector. Does anyone know why Marlin went away from the straight ejector? It would be a lot easier to mill the bolt face for the early design as opposed to the second design horse shoe. I am thinking there were ejection problems? Anybody know?
