Marlin Model 1894 44-40 S/N 127857

Post by HermanC »

Needing history info and how much value. Was my deer rifle for years, but my eyes "aint" what they used to be. Was my father's rifle. Am considering on selling, maybe. Sweet little rifle. Any history info would be appreciated. Thanks.

HermanC;

The old factory records show your Marlin Model 1894 as being a .38-40 caliber and shipped with a 26 inch octagon barrel, in early 1896. Both of the later items are good for you if you intend on selling your father's rifle. (Check with family members first to see if anyone wants to keep the gun in the family) The 26 inch barrel is non-standard as the standard barrel length for the Model 1894 was only 24 inches, and the extra length barrel makes it more interesting to collectors, hence a little more valuable. The 1896 ship date makes this an antique firearm, meaning you do not have to go through a licensed Federal Firearms Dealer to sell or ship to someone else.
As to current value, that all depends on the current overall condition of the remaining original factory finish on the wood and metal. Without knowing these conditions, it is not possible to give an accurate estimation of value.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

If it was still a .38-40, I might be interested in it, depending on the condition and price of course.

Sorry, the S/N is 125857, not 127857. Yep, my eyes are going out, it seems and I do use 44-40

HermanC;

Well, that changes things.......serial number 125857 is a Model 1894 in .44-40 caliber with a 24 inch octagon barrel. It was shipped late 1895. Still, a good collectors item in that it is a .44-40 caliber and still an antique.
