Matt finished Barrel

Post by daville »

Today for the first time I held a Marlin 1889 with a matt finish 1/2 round 1/2 octagon barrel deluxe with 'B' checkering. The flat as well as the round top sections were matt finish. The rifle was lettered from Cody but no mention of the matt finish. Are there any records the give you a hint of how many were matted. Was it a practice of not noting this finish?

Daville;

You must be looking at the Model 1889 on the Morphy auction. Very nice gun! I cannot remember seeing any notations in the records for matted barrels. It is an uncommon special order feature, and seldom seen on any model Marlin (other than some shotguns).
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Have you held the rifle? They have some impressive rifles up for auction. I plan on attending but may not be able to afford to buy, after seeing some of the last pricing

Daville;

Only have seen the pictures of the Model 1889, and other items in the auction. Yes, there are some wonderful guns in this auction.
The Model 1889 is a really special gun with the matted, half octagon barrel, half magazine and pistol grip stock. The wood is also very nice with some exceptional grain. The only way it could be better is if it had a case colored receiver.
I intend to phone bid one item. Good luck at the auction!

That gun sold for $7000.00 + the 20% buyer's premium.
