Center Fire Ammo 1892

Post by Beth310page »

1 - I have read some of the members posts - lot of Good info - THANKS
2 -I am thinking about buying an 1892 Marlin Safety in 32 cal. (FOR CENTER FIRE USE)
3 - According to wisnersinc.com's web site, 32 CF COLT ammo was used.
OK the big question - Can S&W 32 LONG be used in this?
also some one on Gunbroker.com suggested - Caliber: Other .32/.325/.327
Any truth to this?

Great Web site!!!

Bob;

The .32 Colt and .32 S&W Long are two different cartridges. They are close in diminsions, but the .32 S&W has a longer case, larger rim diameter and larger base diameter. So you would have to have the chamber reamed to accept the .32 S&W cartridge and I believe the magazine tube slot enlarged as well. All of this would affect the collector value of the gun in question. If you are going to be shooting centerfire cartridges and intend on reloading them, just stick with the .32 Colt cartridge. Check with Buffalo Arms for cases and dies.
Good luck........
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Regnier -
Thanks for the response.
OK on your info. No I don't reload
I was looking for a 32 Cal Repeating Rifle, and saw the Marlin posted on Gunbroker.
I have not seen any other 32 cal,S&W, in a repeating rifle. ( I have a lot of it )
I have seen the Marlin in a 32-20. So unlike the confusion of the 32 CF for the 92, is there only 1 / 32-20 caliber type of ammo?
Thanks again

Bob;

The .32-20 caliber cartridge is a popular, small and medium size game caliber cartridge. The nice thing about the .32-20 caliber cartridge is that you can have a rifle and handgun in the same caliber so you would need to carry only one caliber of cartridges for both guns.
The .32-20 caliber was introduced in 1882 in the Model 1873 "W" brand rifle. Marlin made several lever action models in the .32-20 caliber, the Model 1888, 1889, 1894 and the Model 27 & 27 S pump action rifles. Colt, Smith & Wesson and others made handguns in the .32-20 caliber. Colt also made a pump action rifle in .32-20 caliber.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Hi Regnier,
OK, thanks again for your info. Great site! Lots of good info!
OK, if I go with a 92, where would I find CF colt ammo?
Does anybody sell reloads?
I found 4 in my stash, 32 Colt -32 LC -Correct?
I have some 32 Colt NP - too Big?
I have some of the old Rimfire cartridges, both in short and long.
So not a problem in rimfire.
How reliable are the OLDER Rimfire and Center fire Cartridges> 32 colt? 32-20?
Alot to think about.

Alot for you to answer! LOL

If I were you, I'd look into a Marlin Model 1894 chambered in .32-20. I picked one up last year that was made in about 1908 for under $800. It is a nice little rifle and a dream to shoot. The ammunition is readilly available.
I have always shyed away from the Model 1892's in .32 caliber because finding ammo is a problem, and the 1894 in .32-20 is a more powerful round in a stronger built gun.
Just my 2 cents.

Bob;

I checked Buffalo Arms, and they do not have any .32 Colt cartridges. You are correrct in that the .32 Colt, and the .32 Colt NP are two different cartridges.
As to where to find .32 Colt centerfire cartridges, try some of the internet gun auction sites like Gun Broker, Auction Arms, etc. You might try Guns America and Guns International as well.
Since you are interested in .32 caliber guns, think about a new Marlin in the .32 H&R caliber. Buffalo Arms does sell that ammunition.

Gentleman-
Thanks for your inputs to my delema.
I need all the help I can get.
My thought was to look for a rifle that I already had ammo for. ( 32 S&W).
Most of my hand guns are older and so the ammo.- Rimfire & CF.
At this point, I guess I will hold off until I visit a few more gun shows, or something comes along on Gunbroker and can secure a quantity of one or the other Ammo.

All good Marlins come to those who wait!

GAD Custom Loading sells .32 Short Colt, and Marlin rifles chambered for .32 Long can also function and fire .32 Short as well. GAD actually isn't all that spendy on their custom loaded ammo. The cases will be formed from .32 S&W to the .32 Short dimensions.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!

OK, thanks, I will check it out!

I still have not made a decision.
32-20 ammo seems to be in short supply
Colt Long is the same way.
When I do find them, that want big bucks
