gun history

I need to find out when a gun was first purchased. Can I do this with the gun's serial number? I found a site that told me it was made in 1975. The gun is a Marlin Model 60 - 22LR.

The gun has caused a family squabble about who owns the gun...the younger family members think the gun couldn't be the one an older member received for a present. Help.
