Marlin gun cleaning kit

Post by Djboy »

Could anyone shed some info on a metal gun cleaning kit made by Marlin. The kit is red in color and is complete with glass bottles of cleaning oil, cleaning rod, and patch box It is in nice condition. Would someone be able to tell me when these were made and estimate in value. Sorry I can't post pictures. Thanks

Djboy;

The gun cleaning kit you refer to was offered by Marlin with the purchase of a Marlin Model 81 C or 81 DL, starting in 1952. The offer ended in 1956.
The value will depend on the overall condition of the box and the completeness of the contents. They show up from time to time on eBay, and you may want to watch to see what they bring there. They have brought from $50.00 and upwards depending upon the condition.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Hoppes and other companies make some solvents that are just for cleaning lead and copper build up out of the chamber and the rifling in the barrell. Use with a good barrell brush after you have cleaned the barrell clean with the regular powder/nitro solvent and the patches are coming out clean.
