Marlin 1893 ID help

Post by mountaincowboy »

I am looking at an 1893 mfg 1894 in 38-55 with a 16" barrel. A local gun store said that the barrel looks like it Hasn't been cut from the pic i showed them. The receiver is blue not Case colored either. Can anyone tell me if this is a legit gun or pieced together? I find no reference for a 16" barrel with 38-55, unless the owner measured wrong and its 15", i would doubt it unless i'm due to win the lottery since they only made 61 of those.
thanks

If it has a blued receiver, it's most likely a "For Black Powder" gun.
16" barrels were "Trapper "Models", and they're very rare. It's possible
to fake one by cutting the barrel. If the serial number is before 1906
There will be a written record from Marlin on the gun. If it's authentic,
it's worth a lot of money.
There's two ways to handle this. 1) ask for the serial number and check
it out. If the guy doesn't know what he's got it's a steal. 2) You can buy
it on the condition, providing that it's pre 1906, that if it's not documented
you can return it.
