A1 clip mod. update

Post by tigweld »

At (http://www.pbase.com/tigweld/marlin_clip_mod) I have posted some photos of
left to right,A1 clip, modified new "Old Style"clip, and an unmodified "Old Style"
I recently picked up another A1,this time a Marlin and found that trying to use
the clip that I had modified for the Ranger 34A/A1 it would not latch into place.
After looking at the A1 clip that came with the rifle I noticed one more mod.
to do on the front of the clip. Added an approx. 1/8" radius at the top of the
clip front wall as seen in the photo and that seemed to solve the problem.
Wanted to mention this in case someone was having difficulties with the mod.
Also, you can click on the photos for a close-up of the modifications.

It seems that alot of the A1's I have run across at online auction sites and elsewhere are missing the magazine.
I hope that this modification has been helpful to those trying to bring back to life an old A1 .22 which may have been
lying around unused.

Looking at a Marlin 50, it appears the 25/780 clips will also need to be trimmed front and back to fit in the 50 clip slot. Did you do that also? it is hard to tell from the photos. Or did you mod the clip slot? How are the modified clips held in?

You have to remember that the Model 50 .22 semi-auto and the Model A1 .22 semi-auto are two totally different rifles. The Model 50 fires from an open-bolt ,and the Model A1 fires from a closed-bolt. I do not think the magazine modification would even come close to working in the Model 50. The Model 50 magazine/magazine opening is a totally different design than that
of the Model A1. As I understand it, if you do have a Model 50 magazine consider yourself very lucky!!! A very rare item

I just ordered a so-called replacement magazine from Numrich gun parts for my A-1 restoration project. It doesn't work. I'm a bit new to this can you help me out as to how to make the correct mods or point out the previous posts where it was mentioned?

dollarbill,

I did some searching and found my first posting about the clip mod. (http://marlin-collectors.com/forum/view ... =15&t=7317) It was way back on page 12 of Guest Questions. This early posting along with the later one should give you
all the info you need for the magazine/clip modification. If you have any problems let me know.

Just a little update -- after moving I finally got around to ordering the magazine. I haven't attempted the mod yet, but the magazine doesn't latch in the rifle (A1DL) as is -- is that one of the things the mod will correct?

And what did you use to do the mods? A dremel and the cutting tools?
