Greetings from Alaska;
I am curious to know how many square bolt 1895 Marlins were produced. I understand they were produced from 1895-1915.
I have a .40-82 and it appears to have a .408 bore, 1:19 twist. According to info on the web it was made in 1896. I'm going to try some reloading using .409 or .410 lead bullets. Anybody have any load data from the olden days?
Thanks for you help!
Bill

40-82 Winchester shows up in Cartridges of the world as .406 diameter bullet, same as 40-65, 401 Winchester, and 40-72 Winchester. Only ones listed at .408 are the 40-70 Peabody and the 40-90 Peabody. No load data that I saw on the 40-82. >002 does not seem terrably over size for an old caliber. You may want to do a chamber cast as the cartridge dimensions are listed. Case type A, Neck dia. .428, Shoulder .448, base .502, rim dia .604, Rim thick .060, case length 2.40, loaded length 2.77, twist 28. Page 515 10th Edition.

Supercub75;
You have to understand that the exact number of the original Model 1895 manufactured will never be known as the factory records are incomplete. The records end in December of 1906, and there was another 10 years of production for the Model 1895 after that.
Of those that were recorded in the old factory records, there were 1,021 listed as being in the .40-82 caliber in rifle style, and another 9 listed as carbines.
Total production for the period recorded for the Model 1895 was 5,289 guns.
I hope this helps.

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!
