What do I have?

Post by stonewall7 »

My Father-in-law has an old Marlin lever action 30-30 with octagonal barrel. Serial 1734XX

Markings on barrel include:
"30-30"
"Special Smokeless Steel"
"Marlin Firearms Co. New Haven, CT. U.S.A."
"Patented Oct, 11, 1887. April 2, 1889. August 1, 1893"

Top of receiver: "Marlin Safety"

Has a notch in the barrel where a rear blade site could sit, but none there. Actually has a flip-up peep site which sits behind hammer.

He is not a gun guy. Any help identifying is appreciated.

Stonewall7;

For now, all we can tell you is that you have a Marlin Model 1893 that was shipped approximately 1898 from the serial number posted.
If you remove the tang mounted peep sight, you will find the model marking there, behind the hammer.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

The growing federal deficit = generational slavery to the national debt.

If the world was perfect.......it wouldn't be.
