I don't have my Brophy's book handy anymore, loaned it and it never came back...Did Marlin make many 1881s in 38-56?

The Model 1881 was made in four (4) calibers. The .45 Government or .45-70, the .40-60 Marlin (these two calibers were in the large frame guns), .32-40 Ballard and the .38-55 Ballard (these two calibers were in the small or thin frame guns). The Model 1895 was made in .38-56, but not the Model 1881.

Thanks for your post info. At first looking at this rifle, the caliber mark looked like 38-56. There was some surface rust and dirt, and it looked like a 56 and was tagged as such by the seller. Rubbing it on another look showed the top horizontal bar of the five appeared to be chipped off on the stamp, but the mark, on closer examination, is in fact a 38-55. If it had been a 38-56 and odd at that, would have been nice, but... It is a 24 inch barrel rifle, bore is not bad. I will have to see how it shoots. Thanks again for your help.
