I Have this old Marlin 16 guage barely read barrel markings, see New Haven "special smokeless steel, the barrel is 20& 1/2 or 3/4" long , doesn't appear to be cut, has bead front sight. On the R side between the outside hammer and the trigger is a push pin spring loaded that does something (?) It appears to be a takedown, even though I couldn't probably get it back together. Does anyone know more about this gun, it is in very good cond. except brown finish and seem to work good mechanically. I don'plan to shoot it. Also has a small humpback on top about an inch forward on breech and almost like a scope raised base about 4 1/8"long. I would call it a riot gun except book says it would have a 20" barrel. Can anyone shed some light ? Thanks, My first post.

Rugerluger;

Marlin made two exposed hammer, pump action shotguns in 16 gauge. The Model 16 and the Model 30. The Model 16 is unmarked for model number whereas the Model 30 will be marked with the model number on the upper tang, behind the hammer. Both used the push pin "hang fire safety" release button on the side of the receiver. (Some Model 30's also used the newer lever style down by the trigger) Both models are takedown actions and depending on which model you have, there is a different system between them.
Look at the bottom of the barrel for a serial number. Beside the serial number will be a letter (either F, M or C for Full choke, modified choke or C for cylinder bore) A true riot gun will have the cylinder bore marking.
The "hang fire safety" release button is there to open the action if the gun has either a hang fire, or if the gun is not loaded and needs to have the action opened. If you can open the action without pressing the button in or it just fired, then your action is NOT working properly. For proper working action, if the gun has not been fired, you must push the button in order to pump the action open.
The Model 16 was made from 1903 to 1910, and the Model 30 was made from 1911 to 1917. From the range of your serial number, I suspect you have a Model 16.
