Marlin 38W S/N 79496, Ammo Avail?
I have inherited a Marlin Lever Action 38W, Side Action "Marlin Safety" inscribed on top of chamber area, Octagonal 24" Barrel, Patented Oct 11, 1887 & April 2, 1889. Searching the internet I found this gun is 38-40 cal. and of the black powder, lower pressure ammo. Can ammo be found for this gun, so we can shoot it? Thanks, Tom

The S/N indicates it was built 1892 or 1893. Not sure they built the 38W until 1893 - someone may know which. No fancy stuff, but in really good condition. Still curious what folks do with guns of this era other than display them.

Tom,
Sounds like you have a model 1889, and if its in good shape, you can shoot it. I would use lead over jacketed ammo as the steel is softer in the old guns. You can find ammo pretty easy. Congrats on having fine old Marlin passed down.
