Marlin 39A Manufacture Date
I have a Marlin 39A with serial number J996L located under the cocking lever. I am 68 years old and the gun is in very good condition and belonged to my grandfather. Can you tell me the manufacture date? Any information will be appreciated. Thanks.

A Marlin Model 39-A with a "J" prefix serial number would have been manufactured in 1952. There were 32,129 Model 39-A's made that year. This Model 39-A will still have the older, Ballard style rifling instead of the newer, patented Micro-Groove rifling Marlin started using in 1954.
I hope this helps.

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

A Marlin Model 39-A with a "B" serial number prefix would have been made in 1940. This will be an early 39-A gun with a case-colored receiver and the old, original Ballard style rifling. A collectors item to be sure........
