I'm goinv to an auction and there is a " Marlin special smoke steel New Haven model 93, serial #1978. What would be my high bid on tis rifle? Thank you for yout time.

Without knowing anything about the condition, there is no way of giving you an indication as to top value.
Several years ago, I sold a "Like New" Marlin Model 1893 for $3,500.00. And, it was the least desirable version one would want being a round barrel .30-30 with a "D" serial number prefix. The gun was really like new, but who wants a round barrel .30-30? Go by average prices you see on some of the internet auction sites to get an idea. That way, when you get to the auction, you will have a better idea as to condition and what they go for in that overall condition.
