Marlin 1881

Post by Butterrmb »

I have a Marlin 1881 serial # 16797, chambered 38-55. Wondering about manufacture date. Also the rifle has rusted some on the outside, any recommendation on cleaning the rifle?

I use 0000 steele wool and gun oil. soft enough not to damage the metal but strong enough to remove rust available at most lumber yards.

Butterrmb;

You have what is known to Marlin collectors as a Marlin Model 1881 small frame. It left the factory with a 28 inch octagon barrel in .38-55 Marlin Ballard caliber in mid-late 1887.
Of the nearly 22,000 Marlin Model 1881's only 3,563 are listed in the old factory records in the .38-55 Marlin Ballard caliber.
I hope this helps.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

info request

Hi,

I have some mint marlins. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of the value of one or two. I displayed a few marlins at the Marlin show in Vegas in the 70's. The marlin rep. gave me a plaque. I can give info and pic’s.

Thanks
