Mod. 31 Question

I have a Marlin model 31 in 16 gauge. The "thumb button" release for the pump does not function, I removed the sideplate and observed the mechanism, it appears that the button does not make contact with anything, after further inspection it looks like a piece of metal is broken off in the "bolt". I have no idea what the original piece looks like or what it is called, so I'm not able to order a new piece, Any ideas?
