Model 39 a rifle

Post by Floyd Grayson » Thu May 02, 2019 6:39 pm

I am looking at a marlin 39 a and something is bothering me about the rifle. The inscription on the barrel says Marlin Firearms Corperation & it is an octogan barrel. This would seem to be an 39 not a 39a. But the serial # is J1552 which was a 50's made rifle which would be a 39a Right? So is the barrel & receiver not a match? Also the magazine tube seems to be shorter then normal?? Thanks

Floyd;

The "J" serial number prefix would indicate a receiver from 1952. To help clarify, a Marlin Model 39 will be marked Model 39 on the upper tang, behind the hammer. Is that marking there? That would appear to be a Model 39 marked barrel being that is is an octagon shape. The Model 39-A forearm is a large, beavertail shape and for a round barrel. The Model 39 had a slim forearm and was shaped for an octagon barrel. Which forearm does this rifle have? The Model 39 had a case-colored receiver and the Model 39-A will have a blued receiver. Which does this rifle have?

The receiver is blued. It seems from the receiver forward it's a 39. Is it possible to mate a 39 barrel to 39a receiver? This rifle is on gun broker item # 809110013 So I'm guessing if this is a mixed componant firearm it's not worth near as much/ Thanks

Floyd;

Yes, a Model 39 barrel will screw into a Model 39-A receiver. In fact, a Model 1892 barrel ( in .22 caliber ) will screw into a Model 39-A receiver.
It appears that this rifle is a "FrankenMarlin" ........a put together!
