You may have a Marlin 39A made in 1939.. first year production. It should have a case hardened receiver, lever and hammer, "s" shaped pistol grip stock and round blued 24" barrel....

The 24" barrel length was made in both smooth and checkered configurations, while the 20" barrel length had smooth stocks only.

One thing to be aware of... Not all Marlin 39A with a carved squirrel buttstock are genuine 39A-DL's. Marlin offered to install the carved squirrel buttstock on any Marlin 39A, regardless of year. Marlin offered 4 calibers with 24" barrels... 357 Mag/38 Spec, 44 Mag, 44-40 and 45 Colt.
Three of these calibers were available with either smooth (non-checkered) or checkered stocks, and one, the 44-40 only came with checkered stocks.

The only production numbers available, I believe, are for the special runs done for Davidsons and TALO...
