Re: Model 1881 sight code

Does anyone know the code for Lyman no. 15 Windage Tang Sight for the model 1881 rifle. The code letter should be just an "M" for the 1881 regardless of which tang sight it is. The 1881 sights are all extremely rare, but the fixed staff #15 is the rarest as they were poor sellers, and did...

Re: Marlin 39

Early 1930's, but can't tell you a value without great pictures, and a good description of the bore.

Re: How old is my Marlin Model 39 22 cal Serial # 5775

I also have a model 39 takedown with octagon barrel. Serial number prefix first is H.S 19875. I have looked everywhere for years on more info but no luck. This was my great grandfather's gun I would really like to know more about it thank you! Since it has the HS prefix it should date to the early ...

Re: model 1889 mystery

Likely someone used a mag tube assembly from a newer .357 Marlin 1894. Maybe even got a modern barrel too and fitted it to the old 1889 receiver?

Re: model 1889 mystery

It's obviously been either rebored, or relined since a .38-40 is actually .401" and too large to use a .357" bullet. Not sure what someone did to accommodate the mag tube with a .38 or .357 rim size? Too large for a .32-20 mag tube, and too small for a .38-40 or .44-40 mag tube. I assume i...

Re: I have a Marlin Ballard #2 sporting rifle

The .32 Long should be kept to velocities of under 1000 fps, and you can use .32 S&W light load data for it. But bullets are the tougher part as the .32 Long cases are smaller diameter so you need to try and find a heeled bullet for it, or buy a mold for the heeled bullets and cast your own. Acc...

Re: I have a Marlin Ballard #2 sporting rifle

It would really help to know what cartridge it's chambered for since Marlin made the #2 in a half dozen different cartridges. Pressures for a #2 should be kept below 20,000 psi, and even 15,000 psi is better. It's a cast action and should be kept pretty mild.

Re: Black powder loads for your levers- 45-70

Darn nice shooting Sir! What are you using for your rear sight? The rear sight is an original Marlin Ballard tang sight. A very rare version as it's the early mid range version that is 1" shorter than a long range, but also 1" taller than the later mid range Marlin offered. Only Ballard t...

Re: Marlin 1894 25-20 questions

Likely built around 1908 I'd guess. Records stopped in 1906 at around 355,600. Can't tell you a value without good pictures and accurate bore description.

Re: Black powder loads for your levers- 45-70

I do occasionally shoot BP and also use Swiss 1.5fg when loading for my .45-70 rifle. My bullet is a 530 gr. because mine is a single shot Marlin Ballard and no problem with the long bullet like it could be with a lever action repeater. My load is 67 grs. of Swiss and extremely accurate. But I load ...

With no barrel markings at all it sounds like it's had a new barrel put on it.

Re: I recently inherited a Marlin lever action 30 30 with waffle top.

I can tell you it's a Model 336, which it should state on the barrel, and built in 1948.
