Stopped by a friends yesterday to say hi & move a tree stand.
Ended up BS'ing for an hour & drinking a couple of his beers instead.
He's an older guy, 85 I think & a WW2 vet. Anyhow rabbits been getting into his garden & he wanted a 22 revolver since he cant get to a 22 or shotgun fast enuff. Sadly I couldn't help him out but we ended up in his back room & theres a coupla guns on a chair.
I spot a Marlin bullseye in the but of one & it turns out to be a Model 42A takedown slide action 12 gage.
I couldn't hide my excitement when I asked him what he'd take for it.
All he said was he's not ready yet.
It was his wifes uncles, all of them were. Theres a Browning Auto5 & a Win slide action I didn't look at good & a stevens single barrel break open. Said his wifes uncle came by one day about 30 years ago & just gave them to him. He died a few months later. Johns wife died awhile back too & he dont really have anybody anymore.
He lets me hunt & I do alot of things for him. I think to him the most important is I listen to him. Old folks have alot to share but often not alot of folks to share with.
Anyway, he gives me alot of stuff. 80% ends up at goodwill but he dont care, someone will use it & he cant drive himself anymore.
I may be mistaken but I fully expect him to try & give me the shotgun at some point. He knows I like Marlins & the whole thing seems like a setup.
I like the man & consider him a very close friend. I dont want it for free but don t know what theyre worth either.
It was very clean, no rust or pitting but not much blue either. Seemed to function smoothly & positively.
Anyone care to hazzard a ballpark guess as to value?
Also , are they safe to shoot?
Thanks!

Thanks Steve!
I got about the same advice regarding price on the MO site but the feller said not to shoot it. If I end up with it I'll give it a good looking over & if I feel its warrented have my smith look at it. In all honesty tho it looked in fine shape & well cared for.
Thanks again, if I end up with it I'll post a few pics!
