If you're buying it yourself, how about a single shot 22? These can be a good gun with which to learn safe gun handling and trigger control. I don't know about Mass, but around here, you can find servicable single shot 22s for under 100 bucks.

When you take it to a range, you will have a chance to see other kinds of rifles and hopefully even try them. By this time next year, you would have a better idea which way you wanted to proceed in acquiring a centerfire rifle.

If you can't find a nice single shot 22 in your area, have your Dad PM me & we might be able to work something out with an older Marlin 100G I have around here somewhere. SW

My first rifle was a 22 single shot at age 12. At 14 I was given a 30-30. If you like lever action rifles, which once you shoot them you will, 30-30 is an easy one to shoot, legal for deer and black bear in most states, has inexspensive ammunition. The 22 will let you shoot a lot more, the 30-30 will let you hunt most places. You did not state whether you have gone through a gun safety course. It is highly recommended if not legally required in most states to hunt. Hope this helps.
