I inherited a marlin pat date may 12, 1896 June 2 1896, mar 29, 1904 aug 7, 1906 may 19 1908 Nov 23 1909 Dec 21 1909. Serial number on the reciever is 2743. It has an internal hammer. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Those patent dates were utilized on several different Marlin hammerless models. What gauge is your shotgun? Is is a 12 gauge or a 20 gauge?
The model marking should be stamped somewhere on the receiver. Usually, on the bottom, near the loading port.
With the model number, we can give your more information regarding production dates, etc.

Hello, new user...old soldier. Hope you don't mind. I have a nice Marlin 1896 12 gauge pump fully functional I picked up a few years ago on a trade. I am in a western gunfighters show group here in OK and I sometimes use it for that...blanks ONLY of course. I am curious about it's history if you would please oblige. The barrel markings are very worn thought the 1896 and 1898 pat's are clear. The serial number on the receiver is 49976. Can you tell me it's manufacture date? And more importantly...I need to find a breakdown diagram to give it a proper cleaning. Know where I can find these? Thank you sirs...Jerry in OK>

Your Marlin Model 1898, exposed hammer, pump action shotgun was shipped from the factory in New Haven, Ct. in early 1903, 12 gauge with a 30 inch full choke barrel. The barrel serial number was 51462.
On page 368 of the Brophy Marlin book, there is a parts breakdown of a Model 17, which would pretty much have the same internal parts as a Model 1898 shotgun. Main difference is the Model 1898 has a takedown action whereas the Model 17 was a solid frame, non-takedown action.
The parts in the photo are pretty much in relation to each other.
