About 35 or 40 years ago I obtained a new model 1895 in 45/70. the
serial # is different from the standard serial #'s. (1895 7 there is a space between the1895 and the #7). The person I
bought it from did mention that it was one of the first off the line and
specialy numbered to be given to members of the design team. Would you have any
additional information on these special serial #'s and if not could you
recommend where I might find this information? Thank you for your time on
this matter.

Don;

The first New Marlin Model 1895's came out in 1971, and the serial numbers did start with the number 7. The Model 1895 was numbered in with a group of Model 336 and 444 guns. This grouping of serial numbers with various models was done up to 1988, but only one year with the Model 1895 grouped in with the other models listed. After that, the Model 1895 serial numbers start with the letter "B".

Thank you for the information. You say that the new 1895 serial # started with a 7 does this infer that this could be the first gun off the line as it only has the # 7?
