I have a gun that belonged to my grandfather - any info is appreciated. Inscription on the barrel reads
The Marlin Firearms Corporation, New Haven, Conn. U.S.A.
PATD, U.S.A. MAR. 27, MAY 19, 1908, NOV. 28, 1909. 2PATENTS-PATENTS PENDING.
Serial number: 5881

Need just a little more information from your Marlin shotgun. Is this a hammerless shotgun or does it have an exposed hammer?
Also, look at the side of the barrel for the gauge of this shotgun. It should be either a 12 gauge, 16 or a 20 gauge gun.
Nearly all Marlin shotguns are marked with a model number. The hammerless guns are usually marked on the bottom of the receiver near the loading port, and the exposed hammer guns are marked on the upper tang, behind the hammer.

The Model 49, exposed hammer, pump action 12 gauge shotgun was made between 1928 and 1930. It was one of the guns Marlin offered in their stock option sales pitches. Buy 4 shares of Marlin stock for $100.00 and you got your choice of guns.
The Model 49 was really a gun made up from parts on hand of several different models of Marlin shotguns. Because of this, the Model 49 can e found with either type of patented "Hang Fire Safety Release" that Marlin produced over the years. The takedown system used was the first type found on the earlier Marlin shotguns. The Model 49 had simple checking to the stock and forearm. The Model 49 was also the only exposed hammer gun to have a "hump" on top of the receiver.
The Model 49 was never a cataloged item.
